At our shop, we make letters from all kinds of substrates, in many sizes and in numerous price ranges. Most often the typical install involves stud mounting, which is ideal in many circumstances, but often overlooked when the letters are light gauge and flat.

But, that can be a shame as often stud mounting is still the best way to install even lightweight letters. There is no reason the studs have to thread in from the backs of the letters. If the studs are countersunk machine screws, both countersunk and painted to match (or powder coated), they will be nearly invisible and work perfectly fine as studs.

然而，即使标识字本身非常轻，安装的最好方式仍然是采用螺柱固定，而唯一不同的就是安装时要十分小心，双头螺柱必须从标识字背面穿过则完全没有必要。如果螺柱选用的是埋头类型的话，不仅需要打埋头孔，还要选用与其搭配的喷涂颜色或粉末对标识表面进行喷涂，这样，有效降低可见度，提高视觉效果。

A job we did a while back for an oilfield services company will serve as a good example of this type of letter mounting. The substrate was .125” aluminum, far too thin for drilling and tapping, but thick enough to accommodate screws where the heads are countersunk flush with the front surface of the letters. In this case the machine screws or bolts, 3/16” diameter by 3½” long, were put into countersunk holes, making sure they were truly smooth and flush with the front surface of the letters. All were painted (in this case, powder coated) at the same time as the letters. They were tightly secured with nuts and lock washers since they are never intended to be removed.

The holes in the letters were drilled by hand after the letters were cut. So, even though we could draw the pattern with a plotter and felt tip pen, we still needed to show exactly where each stud was. To facilitate marking the correct hole pattern, we taped the letters in place face down on a plotter-drawn pattern, gently turned the pattern over and rubbed it with a crayon, which made clear marks where the countersunk bolt heads were.

This set of large and small letters, all 1/8” thick only, were mounted to a limestone rock wall, offset from the surface about ½” or so. The bolt heads (or stud heads in this case) are visually insignificant at 15 feet away, and basically invisible from any distance over about 25 feet.

Another aluminum letter job we did using light-gauge aluminum was a sign for a lake house address made from a rough-shaped cedar board provided by our client. He wanted metallic silver metal letters, which were to be mounted to a naturally shaped and quite beautiful cedar board that he had put several coats of clear polyurethane on. For this project, it was determined to let the studs become part of the character of the sign, and the letters were cut on a waterjet with square holes to accommodate ¼” diameter carriage head bolts.

This was another case where the studs were put in place before coating the letter, though some of the threads had to be protected since the letters would be bolted in place. The parts were very lightly blasted in a blast cabinet, cleaned off, and finished in an exterior satin silver powder coat, all surfaces except for the last inch or so of threads.

For mounting to our cedar sign, a paper pattern was drawn from our computer file showing the exact hole pattern used in cutting the letters. The letters had been cut on a waterjet with square holes instead of round holes, so the carriage head bolts wouldn’t turn. Instead of hiding the heads, we let them be quite visible, and it did give the sign a different type of personality. These letters were mounted offset from the surface of the wood by the thickness of the nuts and washers on the back side of each letter, approximately 3/8”.

This style of letters, with the bolt heads proudly out front, would work well on ranch and farm signs with typical satin black metal letters. In fact we had a sign refurbish project, totally refinishing a sign we had made for a ranch about 10 years ago, the bolt heads in that project were also not hidden, though these were typical hex bolts and the heads were intentionally visible. All was painted or powder coated after the bolts were in place. We didn’t want a nice smooth look, and the font we used and the exposed bolt heads were part of how we wanted the sign to look. I guess the customer liked it because he just recently paid the cost to give it a whole new life span.

标识字中凸出螺栓头这种风格的标识非常适合大型牧场、农场等场所，并用典型的缎面黑色的金属标识字装点，增加其视觉效果。近日，我们承接了一项标识翻新项目，而事实上早在10年前，就曾为一个牧场更新过标识，并在之前的那个项目中，螺栓头也没有进行隐藏处理，都属于典型的六角头螺栓，且都是可以直接看见的，在螺栓固定好后，就可以进行表面的喷涂或粉末涂层处理。其实，我们并不需要既光滑又美观的外形，有关选用的字体以及裸露在外的螺栓头也是我们想要标识外形达到的效果。此外，我认为，这种风格是会受到客户青睐的，从一次性付清所有费用就可看出。

Not all of our lightweight letters are metal, however. Some are light weight plastic and may be installed with adhesives and not screws or studs. Often these letters are cut from black PVC sheet, from 1/8” to ½” thick. A job we recently did for a small law office involved these types of letters and though it was a simple install, there were a lot of parts, and saving time on the process was important. On jobs like these, one thing that can speed up installation is the use of a simple hobbyist-type hot glue gun and that type of thermoplastic adhesive in addition to 100 percent silicone caulk, which is a common signage adhesive.

然而，并不是所有的轻量型标识字都是选用金属材质制作而成，有些采用的就是轻质的塑料材料制作，安装使用的是胶粘剂，而不是螺钉或螺柱。通常来说，这些标识字采用厚度在1/8”-½”范围内、黑色的PVC板材料进行制作。最近，我们为一家律师事务所制作的标识就是采用这种材料，接着还负责其安装工作，由于其由多个部分组成，因此，如何在安装过程中节省时间是很重要的。类似于这种工作，加快安装速度的方式就是使用热熔胶枪，这种胶固产品除了100%硅树脂外，可以完成绝大多数常见标识的固定。

In the past we would use silicone as our glue, and then plenty of duct tape or masking tape to secure our letters and logos in place until the silicone dried. The drying process can take an hour or two, and may require a return trip to remove the tape. But, by using just a few drops of hot glue put on last (that is after you’ve already put the amount of silicone you intend to use), it is only essential to hold a letter or part in place for 10 seconds or so and then it is on its own.

在过去，我们一般采用硅胶作为胶粘剂，同时借助于大量的胶带或纸胶带将标识、logo进行固定，直到硅胶完全固化，整个固化时间将持续1-2个小时，并且可能还需要清楚掉固定使用的胶带。但使用了大量的硅胶固定之后，再在其上面滴上些热胶，只需对标识字或所要固定的部分按压10秒钟左右，就可以稳稳地将其固定。

The hot glue will hold it for a while, or who knows how long really, but the permanent adhesive is the silicone, and it will have plenty of time to set up while the hot glue does the work up front. Hot glue can be a useful adhesive in other installation situations, so keeping a small inventory of hot glue sticks and one of these inexpensive glue guns on a sign truck is probably a good idea.

热胶需持续一段时间，具体长短主要由所选材料而定，但永久性胶粘产品当属硅胶，使用之后再用热胶固定，然后，花费一些时间对标识的位置进行确认。即使是其他类型的安装方式，热胶也是一种非常有效的胶粘产品。总之，对于固定标识来说，库存一定量的该产品，加上物美价廉的把胶枪绝对称得上最完美的组合。

In the sign or letter installation business, no one size fits all. Some jobs require finesse, and some are intentionally imperfect, and all of them need to be done professionally and efficiently, so we can have fun and still maintain a decent bottom line. Well, that’s the goal, anyway.

不管是安装标识还是标识字，都没有一种放之四海而皆准的方式。因为对有些业务来说，需要掌握一定的技巧，保证外形美观，而有些则不需要，但无论选用何种方式，都要具备一定的专业度和工作效率，这样，不仅增加客户对产品的认可，还能提升其体验。
